Leak, cover-up at U.K. reactor could have led to radioactive fire: catastrophe averted by luck and laundryman
Two years ago, a burst pipe inside the Sizewell A nuclear reactor on the Suffolk coast in England led to a huge leak from the pond used to cool thousands of nuclear fuel rods. If the nuclear fuel rods had caught fire, the resulting radioactive plume could have landed on villages along the coast. The near disaster was covered up and, it is now revealed, was averted by the alertness of a laundry worker who spotted water on the floor.
